It is the first day of Sam's favorite month, the Christmas month of December. It's finally time for coziness, glitter, secrets, baking, and decorating. During the morning assembly, the teacher Ammi brings out the magical calendar. She explains that every day until Christmas, they will take turns drawing a slip with the day's date. The one who gets Christmas Eve must guard the slip extra carefully. When Esme asks why, Ammi laughs and says that otherwise, there will be no Christmas. Sam feels completely cold inside, and when Christmas Eve accidentally comes loose from the calendar and ends up in the washing machine, it's really over. But then Sam tells Esme what happened, even though they don't really know each other.
